PHC’s founder, Monique P. Garrity, hails from the Artibonite Valley of Haiti and never forgot her roots. During her 40 year career as a development economist, she dreamed of providing at-risk children of the Valley the transformative gift of education and a chance to have fulfilling and productive lives.
At the suggestion of friends, in the fall of 2004 she visited a mission in Petite-Riviere de l’Artibonite which included a co-ed primary school of 250 children, an orphanage of 35 girls and a small dispensary. Under the care of the Haitian Catholic Congregation of the Little Sisters of St. Theresa, three sisters and a committed staff of 20 struggled daily to meet the most basic needs of the children.
Thus was born the idea of establishing a long-term partnership with the Sisters to provide these children access to quality education. With the support of many committed individuals from across the globe and several organizations, PHC is already making its mark – however small – on improving educational opportunities for vulnerable children.
Partners for Haitian Children was founded in 2006 and is a tax-exempt charitable organization under section 501 (c) (3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code.
